James Claude Gano passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at his home. He was born September 8, 1932 in New Philadelphia, Ohio to the late James and Mary (French) Gano.
James graduated in 1950 from Dover High School in Ohio. He then joined the United States Navy and served honorably for four years. After his service, he completed some college before beginning his apprenticeship as a tool and die maker, with a 30-year career at General Motors. While working there in Sandusky, he met the love of his life, Sophia Risner, with whom he cherished 65 years of marriage. In his free time after work, he raised livestock and crops as a part-time farmer. James was an avid golfer and outdoorsman, spending much time hunting and fishing. He enjoyed trips to Florida, as they allowed him to golf and fish year-round. He also loved to play Dominos and Euchre.
James is survived by his wife, Sophia Gano; children, Connie (Marty) Caporossi, Kathy Lower, and Dr. Robert (Meredith) Gano; grandchildren, Michael Wolthuis, Cris (John) Nichols, Mario (Jesse) Caporossi, Carly Caporossi, Philip (Krista) Lower, Jr., Dr. Nicholas Lower, Sarah, Sammy, and Jack Gano; great-grandchildren, Jake (Melissa), Sam, Molly, Ayden, Mylee, Mason, Gianna, and Emmett; and a sister, Barbara (Bud) Lee.
The family will receive friends Friday, October 2, 2020 from 5-7:00PM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 3926 S 9th St, Kalamazoo, MI 49009. A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 3 at 1:00PM at Hope Cemetery in Texas Township.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the Wounded Warrior Project.
