Portage Passed away Saturday, February 5, 2011. Iona was born June 13, 1922 in Bay City, a daughter of Charles and Mable Beardsley Thompson. In 1959, Iona and her husband, Byron, moved to Portage and started Hi-Way Service, on what is now known as Shaver Rd., which they operated for several years. She then worked for W.L. Molding for 20 years as a trimmer. Iona was preceded in death by her husband, Byron Nelson, on July 29, 1974. She was also preceded by a brother and 4 sisters. Her survivors include her children, Ronald Anne Nelson of Portage, Carole Melvin LaFrance of Three Rivers and Gary Lorrie Nelson of Schoolcraft; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM in the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. with Rev James Dyke officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. The visitation for Mrs. Nelson will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Memorials may be given to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
