Barbara Kay Tully, age 75, was unexpectedly taken home to be with our good Lord and Savior on Thursday evening, June 29, 2017. She was born on October 27, 1941 in Mt. Pleasant, MI a daughter of Francis and Harriette (Childs) Johnston.
Barbara grew up in the Campbell Building on Main Street and Broadway, where she sang side by side with her two cousins on the Happy Hour Christian Radio Show. This was the start of her love for music and dancing. Realizing sticking thumbtacks in her saddle shoes and tapping on hardwood floors was not going to take her to the bigger Broadway, she took up the flute and trumpet in the school band and later the piano. In school, Barb loved the sock-hops, cheerleading, badminton, service clubs, serving as class secretary (most likely where she picked up her amazing organizational skills) and worked in a couple of work-co-ops. She also was known to take her father's car (without permission) and drag race between the lights out on Mission Street.
The summer after graduating high school, Barbara pulled into Miller's Gas Station where her attention turned to the man in baby blues, a dapper Richard Wayne Tully. Richard and Barbara started dating and were married the following summer. The young newlyweds then left for Fort Benning, Georgia where Barbara graduated with a BS of Fine Arts in polishing brass and boots.
In the late 60's, the young Tully family moved to Schoolcraft, Michigan where she blossomed raising her "A", "B", "C" and "D". This is where Barbara enjoyed bowling, camping, coaching the "Tully Tigers", being a Brownie leader, riding her orange "flower power" Suzuki 125, and crushing on Joe Namath and Elvis Presley.
In the early 80's, Barbara took on two new names. One, when she started working at the Schoolcraft Schools library, where she was lovingly known as "Mrs. T" and two when she became "Grandma Barbie" to her new little grandbabies.
As "Mrs. T" she quickly became a favorite with the students and staff, loving on each child and book that came through her door. As "Grandma Barbie" she enjoyed each grandchild sharing her love of books and ice-cream. "Mrs. T" retired from the Schoolcraft Schools where she worked as a librarian for over 25 years. Retired, she enjoyed spending time with Richard, family, friends, The TIGERS, long walks, poetry, watching the sunsets, camping and snow-birding to Florida each winter.
Barbara was a very cherished and devoted member of Schoolcraft Assembly of God where she sang in the choir, enjoyed worship music, card-giving and loved interceding for others in prayer.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and a grandchild, Eliya Monet-Rain Hayward. On July 1, 1961 Barbara married Richard W. Tully, who survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Angie (Russell) Hayward of Mattawan, Becky Jo Tully of Allegan, Cindy (Bill) Hetrick of Vicksburg and Dyana (Brett) Johnson of Portage; sixteen grandchildren, David (Katie) Hayward, Kerigan Hayward, Cole (Kate) Hayward, Molly Hayward, Seth Hayward, Randi (Frank) Salisbury, Jordan (Carissa) Hayward, Ben Hayward, Leah Hayward, Tatum Hayward, Daniel (Shana) Stroud, James "Jimmy" Page, Bridgette (Gideon) Page, Emmaline (Kyle) Harvey, Jeremiah R. Johnson and Zechariah S. Johnson; twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers, Phil (Bev) Johnston and Edwin (Sandy) Johnston; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held 2-4PM and 6-8PM on Wednesday, July 5th at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Services will be held 11:00 Thursday morning at the funeral home with Pastor Fred Betcher, officiating.
There will be a luncheon announcement made by the pastor.
